Pupils at a Twitter Interfaith Coding for Girls session

In 2015, Faiths Forum for London launched Twitter Interfaith Coding for Girls for pupils from single-faith secondary schools in London. The course was created by female Twitter coding engineers, who deliver the coding classes.

The project is unique because it is led by female engineers, to empower young girls and show them what it is like to work at Twitter’s headquarters in London.

The scheme is a collaboration between the business and faith sectors. Students learn about each other’s shared values while learning about technology. Empowering young women from minority faith communities to pursue careers in the tech industry will have a long-term impact on gender equality in the sector. At the same time, the scheme promotes social cohesion and recognition of the values shared across diverse communities and people of faith.

As of 2021, over 450 pupils from single-faith schools had taken part in the programme. A large majority say they have been inspired to pursue a career in IT, and 60% of those who attended say they have stayed connected across faith schools.
